Body-weight training is 2015’s top fitness trend, beating out last year’s No. 1, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), reports the American College of Sports Medicine.
Body-weight training—using your own weight for resistance, as opposed to free weights or machines—is great for building muscle on the cheap (one reason it gained popularity in the recent recession, says study head Walter Thompson, Ph.D.); if you lack equipment (like when you’re traveling); or when you just want to avoid the gym’s grunting masses.

The powers of a steady fitness routine are impressive: regular exercise can help you build stronger muscles, stave off chronic illnesses, and make your clothes fit a whole lot better. But there’s another benefit of physical activity that deserves a shout-out: the way even moderate amounts seem to shave years off your age, no matter how many birthdays you’ve actually celebrated. Of course, you can’t change your chronological age, but exercise can improve your health to the point where you look and feel younger than you are, says Frank Frisch, PhD, director of kinesiology at Chapman University in Orange, Calif. Get outside already. With Park Rx, it’s what the doctor ordered.
When Dr. Robert Zarr wants to help kids with obesity and diabetes in Washington D.C., he doesn’t just order in another set of pills. He looks up a database of green spaces and asks his patients if they’ve been outside recently. Then he writes a prescription–to a park.
Over the last three years, Zarr has been chief evangelist for Park Rx, a system that makes it easier for doctors to recommend outdoor activity, offering an alternative or supplement to drug treatments.
“We wanted to know whether actually prescribing a park during a doctor’s visit would change behavior.”
With the help of the National Park Service, the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreationand other groups, Zarr mapped and rated 380 parks for their activities, cleanliness, safety, and accessibility to transit. Now when DC’s doctors look up a patient’s electronic record, they can see a database of greenery alongside other options. They can ask patients about their physical activity and what they like doing, then print out a page with details of a nearby park with a map and picture.
